Angelique de Chabot
Bio
Born in 1988, Angélique de Chabot is a visual artist whose work explores the vibrant tension between the living and the sacred. A graduate of the Beaux-Arts de Rueil-Malmaison in 2011, she evolved her initial video practice toward a total art of assemblage, blending sculpture, drawing, and installation. Since 2014, she has composed a mystical bestiary from organic materials—horns, shells, feathers—and ceramics, creating masks and sculptures of both precious and monumental dimensions.
Her research draws on an in-depth study of symbolism, myths, and belief systems across the ages. In 2018, she made a lasting impression with a 30-meter sacred beast at Château Malromé, before joining the prestigious Poush studios in 2022. Her work, such as her 'Meute' procession presented at the Aix-en-Provence Biennale or her immersive performance at the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature in 2024, questions the place of animality and ritual in our modernity. Recently, a residency in Gabon allowed her to hybridize ancient myths with local rites, consolidating her approach as an artist-researcher capable of giving form to the invisible forces of nature.
Residency project
For her residency at Rocabella, Angélique de Chabot proposes a sculptural exploration centered on the myth of the Leviathan and the imagery of the deep. Drawing on her recent research in Gabon, she seeks to confront ancient sea monsters with the solar clarity of the Riviera. The estate, between its lush gardens and its sweeping view of the Mediterranean, becomes the ideal sanctuary for the emergence of a new 'sacred beast' risen from the waves.
The project involves creating a series of ritual masks and monumental sculptures incorporating organic materials collected from the shore and ceramic elements crafted in situ. Angélique envisions an immersive installation that dialogues with Rocabella's neoclassical architecture, transforming the park into a theatre of reinvented myths. By working on the hybridization between mineral and organic, she seeks to capture the sacred essence of maritime life. This residency is conceived as a bridge between mythological abysses and the azure landscape, where each work becomes a talisman aimed at reconciling humanity with the mysterious and untameable powers of the sea.
