Magali Cazot

Bio

Born in Lyon in 1979, Magali Cazo is a painter whose work explores the borderline between dream and reality. Trained at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, then initiated into the rigor of fresco, lithography, and morphology in Parisian ateliers, she has patiently built a singular artistic expression. While she long favored oil painting, the year 2016 marked a decisive shift toward paper and ink—mediums that allow a more intuitive and dreamlike approach.

Based between Paris and the Ardèche, Magali Cazo draws deep inspiration from her wild surroundings. Her work revolves around two axes: imaginary landscapes and human figures imbued with an 'enigmatic tenderness.' Her creations are distinguished by their transparency and silence, born from the slow diffusion of pigments into the fiber of the paper. Exhibited regularly since 2010, from Paris to Montreal, she defines herself as both the author and the spectator of the images that bloom under her brush. Her art bears witness to a sense of total belonging to the living world, where mineral, vegetal, and human merge in a delicate and enduring beauty.

Residency project

For her residency at Rocabella, Magali Cazo proposes a sensory immersion aimed at capturing 'the soul of the place' through her daily practice of ink drawing. Setting aside the Ardèche landscapes for a time, she comes to confront her technique with the raw light and infinite horizons of the Mediterranean. The estate, with its hanging gardens and sweeping views of the azure, becomes the new theatre of her dreamlike explorations.

The challenge of this stay is to let the Riviera environment 'infuse' the paper. Magali aims to work on the morphology of the coastal landscape and the transparency of water, seeking that point of equilibrium where the material expresses itself on the support. Between contemplation and creative gesture, she intends to produce a series of landscapes and figures inspired by the serenity of the villas and the force of the living world unique to the estate. This residency project aims to create a bridge between the memory of the place and the artist's imagination: images that, like dreamlike visions, will delicately imprint themselves on the viewer's gaze, transforming Rocabella into a poetic and silent imprint fixed forever by ink.
