Jules Chahine
Bio
Jules Chahine is a musician and researcher, originally from Damascus, Syria. Trained and active as a teacher in his home country, he developed a deep rootedness in the musical traditions of the Levant before moving to France in 2022, where he continues both his artistic and academic journey.
A laureate of the PAX MUSICA Academy — a prestigious programme dedicated to the encounter between musical cultures and the dialogue of traditions — Jules Chahine has established himself as a distinctive voice in the contemporary music landscape. He is currently pursuing doctoral research focused on Levantine musical repertoires and their dialogue with Western traditions, placing questions of sonic heritage, transmission, and intercultural exchange at the heart of his practice.
His work explores the bridges between East and West, investigating how traditional musical forms can resonate with other aesthetics while preserving their own identity.
Residency project
As part of the Les Gardiennes de la Mer artistic residency at Résidences Rocabella, Jules Chahine immerses himself in a creative space that fosters dialogue between the musical memories of the Levant and the resonances of the Mediterranean landscape. The sea — a millennial crossroads of civilisations and exchange — becomes a mirror of his own journey: that of a musician crossing geographical and cultural borders to weave connections between traditions.
This residency offers him the time and space to deepen his research into Levantine repertoires, inspired by the light and breath of the Mediterranean, the shared cradle of the cultures he studies. Between memory, exile, and transmission, Jules Chahine explores how music can become a universal language, carrying plural identities and a shared humanity.
