Guardians of Yesterday and Today
The Nereids and the Oceanids may well have been the sea’s original guardians. As nymphs subject to the gods, they once embodied both the magnetic beauty of the ocean and its relentless, uncompromising nature. This Hellenic legacy sheds light on humankind’s timeless fascination with the oceanic element. A source of countless contradictions—between depletion and preservation, anxiety and serenity, fulfilment and fury—the ocean concerns us all.
It is easy, then, to see contemporary counterparts to these mythological sentinels: little-known heroines working to protect the seas. Women such as Anita Conti (1899–1997) and Lamya Essemlali (1979) devoted themselves early on to defending this vital and abundant resource. Adventurous and determined, they undeniably embody the role of guardian—a role whose very importance also reflects the health of a society.
