Danylo Dovbysh

Bio

Danylo Dovbysh is a classical saxophonist, born in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, a city located just twenty kilometres from the front line. His remarkable journey — marked by talent, determination, and resilience — has made him one of the most compelling figures of his generation in the world of classical saxophone.

Driven by the dream of studying in France — the historic birthplace of the classical saxophone — he joined the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional (CRR) de Lyon, before taking a decisive step forward: in 2022, the very year war broke out in Ukraine, he was admitted to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris (CNSM), becoming the first Ukrainian saxophonist ever to be accepted into this world-renowned institution. Forced to flee a country at war, he was granted refugee status in France, channelling adversity into artistic determination.

His excellence has been recognised on the international stage: he was awarded First Prize at the Josip Nochta Competition 2024 and Third Prize at the SaxGo Competition in Nova Gorica 2025, cementing his place among the most promising young saxophonists in the classical world. A passionate chamber musician, he co-founded the Hypnos Saxophone Quartet alongside Marin Balssa, Paul Bougarel, and Aurélien Méral, an ensemble dedicated to exploring and expanding the saxophone quartet repertoire.

Residency project

As part of the Les Gardiennes de la Mer artistic residency at Résidences Rocabella, Danylo Dovbysh arrives with a story deeply bound to borders — those one endures, those one crosses, and those that music alone can dissolve. For an artist born just kilometres from a front line and the first Ukrainian saxophonist ever admitted to the CNSM in Paris, the sea carries particular resonance: it embodies both distance and continuity, separation and the hope of another shore.

This residency offers him a space for creation and reflection, away from the demands of competitions and concert stages, to explore new dimensions of his playing and nurture the projects of the Hypnos Quartet. In the breath of the Mediterranean, Danylo Dovbysh's saxophone enters into dialogue with the elements, carrying a voice at once intimate and universal — that of a musician who has chosen beauty as a form of resistance.
