Constantin Zamfiresco
Bio
Constantin Zamfiresco is a young comic book artist, author, teacher, illustrator and production designer in the world of animation film. After graduating from an animation school in 2018, Constantin began working in several Parisian animation studios, but the desire to tell stories and fully develop his own graphic universe gradually took over.
In 2022, he decided to set up a studio near the Parc des Buttes Chaumont alongside several artist friends. He started by creating a multitude of illustrations for festivals, conventions and exhibitions. Among these works, Constantin increasingly began composing his drawings within panels, and started creating small, dreamlike comic strips with very little dialogue on Instagram. He was noticed by the magazine Topo, a publishing house with whom he has collaborated more than four times, and by Les Humanoïdes Associés. It is with Les Humanoïdes Associés that he signed his first comic book for the iconic magazine "Métal Hurlant".
He is currently working on his debut graphic novel, a western, with Humanoïdes Associés.
Residency project
For his residency at Rocabella, Constantin Zamfiresco proposes an in situ creative approach aimed at transforming the architectural elegance of the estate into graphic narrative material. Drawing on his eye as an animation background artist, he plans to use the neoclassical villas and lush gardens of the domain as the primary setting for a new comics project destined for Les Humanoïdes Associés.
The challenge of this stay is to capture the distinctive light of the Côte d'Azur and weave it into a speculative fiction narrative. Constantin intends to explore the contrast between the serenity of Mediterranean panoramas and the dark or technological themes characteristic of the Métal Hurlant universe. Sketching sessions in the gardens and facing the sea will form the basis of digital colorization work seeking to transcribe the vibration of the azure and the cast shadows of umbrella pines.
This residency is conceived as a laboratory for landscape 'staging': the aim is to see how the aesthetics of luxury and wild nature can become the theatre of a powerful speculative fiction. By fusing the spirit of Rocabella with the codes of the ninth art, Constantin Zamfiresco aspires to create pages where the beauty of the place becomes the catalyst for an unprecedented futuristic imaginary.
