Charles Nogier

Bio

Born in 1989, Charles Nogier is a comics author, illustrator, and animator who places visual experimentation at the heart of his storytelling. Trained at the Beaux-Arts d'Angoulême, he co-founded Fidèle Éditions, a demanding publishing house through which he released his first works, including the acclaimed Enos Circus. His talent for silent, atmospheric narrative came to the fore in 2022 with Otto (Éditions de la Cerise), a moving canine epic hailed by critics.

Alongside his publications, Charles Nogier extends his universe into the field of animation. A collaborator of Florence Miailhe on the animated painting feature film La Traversée, he has developed a rare mastery of oil painting on glass—a vibrant, artisanal technique he is currently applying to a short film dedicated to Victor Hugo. Between monumental murals at the Angoulême Festival and live drawing concerts, this multidisciplinary artist explores the porosity between mediums. Whether working for the international press (Internazionale, Ballast) or on his graphic novels, Charles Nogier strives to capture the invisible, making each image a space for reflection on wandering, memory, and light.

Residency project

Charles Nogier's residency project at Rocabella revolves around a dialogue between the technique of glass painting and the writing of his next graphic novel. Taking advantage of the exceptional light of the Riviera and the azure panorama of the estate, he aims to transform this setting into a visual laboratory. The challenge is to harness the suspended atmosphere of the gardens and villas to feed a narrative where the setting becomes a character in its own right.

During his stay, Charles will explore how the oil-on-glass technique—which he is currently perfecting for his Victor Hugo project—can infuse his comics research. The transparency of the support and the depth of color unique to this method will allow him to capture the reflections of the sea and the density of the Mediterranean parkland. This residency is conceived as an interlude of pure creation, enabling a shift from press illustration to the long time of the album. Between in situ sketches and visual experiments, Charles Nogier intends to make Rocabella the anchor point of a narrative where the beauty of the landscape serves as a catalyst for graphic introspection, blending the precision of the line with the sensuality of painting.
